A school assignment that I ended up being extremely happy with. Currently the magazine is not digitalized, so there are some pictures of the physical version and 2 digitalized articles.
The brief was to create an editorial design, where the students themselves picked the subject matter and the content. We had to make sure the magazine had readable articles, so some are sewn together, some copied, and some self-written.
It quickly became apparent that "I<3Ugly" should break the rules of conventional editorial design. To achieve this, the design had to have a lot of rules to break. This meant grueling hours of putting together the most rule-following design guide possible. Sectioned into 12 columns, the entire magazine was built upon all the traditional rules of editorial design. Choosing when to break what rules eventually came down to the subject matter of the fashion being mentioned and the flow of the magazine.
As an example, these white pages are dotted throughout the magazine to give the reader a break from the complete sensory overload that is the rest of the magazine. To tie it all together and to lend the field of ugly fashion legitimacy, the white spreads include quotes about style, inspiration and the importance of leaning into weird or even ugly styles. The quotes are from world famous designers, giants within the field of fashion. Several of them insist that personality, camp, ugliness and breaking from the established conventions are essential to their view on fashion.
The pictures are taken from various sources, but none of them are taken from the articles that are borrowed. This is to make sure the content of the magazine feels informative but also original. At several points the magazine touches on notes of originality, which is why the issue of originality within the magazine itself became important to the brief. If it is simply a rip-off of others ideas it would not work as an examination of ugly fashion.
The value of style
Ugly Fashion
What is style and what is fashion, and is there any value to be gained between them?
The world of ugly fashion has uncovered some very obvious copying within the industry. Why did it take ugly fashion to showcase this so blatantly?
